Here’s an interesting graphic of the spending breakdown for the average U.S. consumer. It’s based a theoretical household “unit” consisting of 2.5 people, not individuals. Looks like such a household unit spends approximately $50,000 per year. Click on image for larger version.

I guess taxes are not considered an expense by the government. I’m not sure where leisure travel or vacation spending falls under, perhaps split as transportation and housing?

The Nokia 5900 XpressMusic first made its whispered rounds in May this year, and chances are this XpressMusic handset could be very real, sharing many features with the Nokia N97 (whether that is fortunate or not depends on how you view the N97, check out our review here). Rumors have it that the 5900 XpressMusic will come with a similar processor and amount of RAM in addition to a 5-megapixel module and 3.5″ touchscreen display as with the Nokia N97. Some rumors have even gone so far as to speculate that the Nokia 5900 XpressMusic might even boast SDXC memory card support. What do you think?

Samsung’s latest DualView TL225 digital camera will come with the following functions to suit the entry level point-and-shoot market, including a 12.2-megapixel sensor, a touch-sensitive front display that could potentially turn the shutter button obsolete if it catches on, haptic feedback, a Schneider-Kreuznach lenses with 4.6x optical zoom, digital image stabilization and the ability to handle 720p video recording for posterity. Expect the TL225 and TL220 to retail for $350 and $300, respectively, when they are launched later this September.

I originally started this column on my take on what an Apple tablet might be (I literally dreamed about it and started to write it down when I woke up). I was really into it, which explains why I didn’t save it as I wrote. I think you can see where this is going.

Like a cartoon character who notices that he’s no longer standing on solid ground and suddenly begins to fall, I reached over to save, but was too late. My trusty XP install suddenly blue screened. Muttering just a few choice words, I rebooted, only to blue screen again. No problem, there’s always “safe mode.” Too bad safe mode blue screened as well. With little hope of getting anything recovered, I gave up, fired up my Mac and started from scratch. It’s not the first time this has happened to me, where for some reason or another I’ve lost work on my computer. I suspect it’s happened to a few of you out there too.

But this latest bad experience changed my thought process from Apple tablets to what’s wrong with the whole PC landscape and today’s operating systems.

There is a new netbook in town – the Datawind Ubisurfer that comes with a 7″ LCD display at 800 x 480 resolution, featuring a large bezel around the display. The keyboard itself will strangely enough, come with a weirdly placed right Shift key. Interestingly enough, the £159 asked for this netbook will come with 30 hours of free Internet access each month thanks to the integrated GPRS modem as it is equipped with a Vodafone SIM card. While Internet access is free within the UK, roaming rates stand at 5p/minute elsewhere in Europe and the US. Features of the Ubisurfer include the following :-

• 1GB RAM
• Linux-based operating system
• Wi-Fi connectivity
• Three USB 2.0 ports
• Microphone and headphone jacks
